Artistic Gymnastics World Championships

The 2017 FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships will take place just the week just before IEEE PIMRC 2017, from October 2-8, at the Olympic Stadium and will add to the panoply of festivities awaiting Montreal in 2017.

Following the success of the 1985 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships, Montreal is hosting this competition for the second time in its history. Don’t miss the unique opportunity to see several Olympic medalists in action who will be together for the first time since the Olympic Games in Rio. Come and cheer for these exceptional athletes who are hoping to stand out in preparation for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. The world’s spotlights will be riveted on them. Many innovations will allow you to see an exceptional show and will give you the impression of being directly in the action.

Nadia Comaneci and Montreal Inseparable

At the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, Canada, a 14-year-old Romanian dynamo captured the hearts and minds of the world with her daring and perfection. We came to know her simply as “Nadia.” By the time the 1976 Olympics ended, Comaneci had earned seven perfect tens, three gold medals, one bronze, one silver and countless fans. She appeared on the covers of TIME, Newsweek and Sports Illustrated – all in the same week – and returned home to Romania to a heroine’s welcome. The queen of the 1976 Olympic Games, Nadia Comaneci, returns to Montreal as the official spokeswoman for the 47th FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships. She who conquered the metropolis with her perfect marks of 10 and her three gold medals 40 years ago: “Every time I come back to Montreal, I have fond memories. It’s a part of my life. I am proud to be the spokesperson”. Like Nadia, be part of this rendezvous from October 2-8, 2017.

The Championships

Up to 500 gymnasts from over 80 countries will compete at the Olympic stadium in search of the 12 World championship titles. During 7 days of intense competition, more than 660 million viewers will be watching the athletes and discovering the city of Montreal and its attractions. The athletes will get to discover the city and its numerous attractions throughout their stay. Meanwhile, Canadians from coast to coast will no doubt be looking on as their favourite gymnasts compete in the week‑long event. The 250 members of the media expected to turn out will help showcase both artistic gymnastics and the host city on the world stage. The organizing committee of the 2017 FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships would like to thank its main sponsors, such as the Government of Canada, the Government of Québec, the City of Montreal and Tourisme Montreal, without whom this event would not be possible.

Heroes Past, Present, and Future

In 1976, Nadia delivered a flawless performance at the Olympic Games in Montreal. At just 14 years of age, she would become the first female gymnast to score a 10, a first in international competition. Since the scoreboard was not designed to display such a score, the judges were forced to show it as 1.0, further highlighting just how outstanding this feat was. In the stands, Montrealers and non-Montrealers alike were witnessing a historic moment unfold before them. This legendary performance would forever cement the bond between Nadia Comaneci and the city of Montreal. Famous from that point on, Nadia would grace the covers of major magazines with praiseworthy titles such as La perfection à 14 ans (“Perfection at 14”), “She stole the show” or “A Star is born”. She would continue along that path until 1981, when she retired. A one-of-a-kind athlete, Nadia Comaneci, managed to push the limits of her discipline.

Montréal, the place to host large-scale athletic events, will once again be the setting for a new page in the annals of elite sports. There is no denying that Montréal is home to a remarkable line of sports heroes, including the queen of the 1976 Olympic Games, Nadia Comaneci, who will come out to see Canada’s and the world’s brightest gymnastics stars shine.
